In my experience of working with people who are considered hoarders, most situations are not as bad as they seem. Nor are they as bad as what you see on TV. There are people that are extreme cases and do require professional help to get through their circumstances, however most people just need a little assistance to get their spaces back in order.
Hoarding stems from many different facets in a person’s life and like an addiction it gets progressively worse over time. Some people may start out buying a few extra items as gifts for friends but then never give them away. A few may buy craft items that they intend to make but never start. Others may begin by collecting items that remind them of someone they have lost in traumatic event and then don’t realize how much they have actually stockpiled around the house.
The collection then reaches a point that becomes overwhelming and trying to figure out what to do with all of it is too much to handle. More stuff is added to the piles and before you know it you are climbing over things just to get to your bed.
My process is a gentle simple way of developing a plan without threatening to get rid of anything in the beginning. By allowing my clients to sort the items first and then figure out what needs to happen is a much more compassionate way of working through these tough circumstances. Once you see the accumulation organized, it becomes easier to make the decisions about how to clear it out.
Hoarding not only hurts the hoarder themselves but also family and friends because they know they can’t help. When someone different and unattached from the situation steps in it is easier to let go and understand the severity of the situation. I am a non-judging person that offers a way out of the clutter and the overwhelming feeling that weighs on you daily.
Scheduling short appointments (about 2 hrs.) with me reduces the stress level of the hoarder and allows the organization process to begin. Call or email for a free consultation.
